Tuunza Mapato Explained: Ksh60 Bob Health Insurance Cover on M-Pesa

If you were unable to go to work today because of an illness, how long would your income sustain you?

For many boda boda riders, mama mbogas, freelancers, and small business owners, missing work; even a few days of work can affect food, school fees, rent or even result in the collapse of the entire biashara.

If this is a reality you relate to, you may want to learn about Tuunza Mapato, a new insurance cover launched by Safaricom and Turaco to help more Kenyans protect their income when illness or death interrupts their ability to earn.

Tuunza Mapato, a new insurance cover from Safaricom and Turaco, offers hospital cash benefits for just Ksh60 per week.

Available through M-Pesa starting from Ksh60 per week, Tuunza Mapato gives users a cash benefit for every night spent in hospital. The money is sent directly to your M-Pesa account and can be used to cover everyday expenses such as medicine, transport, food, or household needs while recovering.

Here is everything you need to know about how Tuunza Mapato works, who qualifies, the benefits available, and how to register for the cover.

What is Tuunza Mapato?

Tuunza Mapato is an affordable insurance cover designed to offer cash support when hospitalisation interrupts your finances and daily life.

The cover pays you a daily cash benefit for every night spent in hospital. The money is sent directly to your M-Pesa account and can be used for expenses that often come with medical emergencies, including medicine, transport, food, rent, or supporting family members while recovering.

Unlike traditional medical insurance covers that settle hospital bills directly with hospitals, Tuunza Mapato provides a cash payout directly to your phone to use it based on your pressing need.

This means you can still benefit from Tuunza Mapato even if you already have another medical cover such as SHA or private health insurance.

What Benefits Do You Get With the Ksh60 Cover?

For Ksh60 per week, Tuunza Mapato’s Msingi Self Cover comes with the following benefits;

  • Ksh1,000 per night spent in hospital
  • Coverage for up to 30 nights per year
  • Ksh100,000 paid to next of kin in case of demise

The cover is fully digital, meaning registration, payments, and claims can all be completed through MyOneApp or via USSD without paperwork or visiting an office.

Once you register, you receive an initial two-week free cover period before automatic weekly deductions begin to help keep your cover active without missing payments.

Why Tuunza Mapato Stands Out

One of the biggest reasons many Kenyans avoid insurance is cost.

Some medical covers require high monthly payments, complicated registration processes, paperwork, or medical checks that often make the cover be beyond the reach of kawaida Kenyans.

Tuunza Mapato is changing the experience through affordability and seamless access; starting from just Ksh60 per week.

You sign up at the click of a few buttons without visiting an office or filling lengthy forms.  Subsequent payments are automated through M-Pesa Ratiba, the standing order feature.

Instead of only settling hospital bills directly with hospitals, Tuunza Mapato sends cash benefits straight to your M-Pesa account for every night spent in hospital. After discharge, you submit the required documents for review, and approved payouts are sent directly to your M-Pesa account.

This helps you manage expenses that often come with medical emergencies, including transport, medicine, special diet, rent, or temporary loss of income while recovering.

Speed matters with Tuunza Mapato. You can submit claims through WhatsApp without filling any forms or sending emails. Once the required documents are submitted and approved, payouts are sent directly to the customer’s M-Pesa account in as low as three days.

What You Should Know Before Signing Up

Once you register for Tuunza Mapato, Turaco will send you the terms and conditions of your cover. It is important to read and understand them before using the service. Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

1. Waiting Period

All members receive a two-week free cover period after registration. However, during this period, only claims resulting from accidents are eligible for payment.

Full benefits become active after the two-week period ends and weekly premium payments begin.

2. Payments Are Automatic

Once you register for Tuunza Mapato, an automatic weekly payment instruction is set up through M-Pesa Ratiba to help keep your cover active.

This means your weekly premium will automatically be deducted from your M-Pesa account on the selected payment date. To remain covered, it is important to ensure your M-Pesa balance has enough money for the deduction each week.

If a payment is missed because of insufficient funds, the cover for the following week becomes inactive until the next automatic payment is made. Members who go  for more than four weeks without making payments may also be required to restart the waiting period once their cover resumes.

Our Take

Hospitalisation affects more than just health, it can also disrupt income, business operations, and household finances. Tuunza Mapato offers a financial cushion through hospital cash benefits paid directly to M-Pesa for just Ksh60 per week.

Whether you are hustler with no formal medical cover or formally employed and simply looking for additional financial protection during medical emergencies, Tuunza Mapato may be worth considering.
