Fun Places to Visit in Nakuru County and Their Charges 

Nakuru County, located in the Great Rift Valley, offers a diverse range of attractions centered on its natural beauty.

From iconic national parks and geological formations to cultural sites, the county is a key destination for both local and international visitors. 

In this article, Money254 will look at some of the places to visit as an individual or family and the charges that come with it.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is globally recognized for its flocks of flamingos. Beyond the flamingos, the park is a crucial sanctuary for endangered species, including black and white rhinos.

It is also a home to leopards, lions, giraffes, and various other wildlife. The park's diverse ecosystem makes it a premier destination for Kenyans who would want to seek the wild animals and also undertake bird watching.

The entry costs are Ksh860 for Kenyan adults and Ksh215 for Kenyan children. Foreigners pay 60USD (Ksh7,770)  for adults and 35USD (Ksh4,526) for children.

Those who have vehicles are charged based on the number of seats as follows: cars with less than six seats are charged Ksh300, while those with 6 to 12 seats pay Ksh1,030.

Entry fees for vehicles that are 13 to 24 seats are Ksh2,585. For vehicles with 25 to 44 seats, the fee is Ksh4,050, and those with 45 seats and above pay Ksh5,000.

Hyrax Hill Museum

Hyrax Hill Museum is a prehistoric site located near Nakuru town. It is known as Hyrax hill owing to the large number of hyraxes which live in the rocks. It suitable for those interested in understanding the archaeological record of human settlement.

The museum features various exhibits and excavated artifacts. One can also undertake activities such as bird watching at the site.

The entry costs are Ksh100 for Kenyan adults and Ksh50 for children. Non-residents from within East Africa pay Ksh400 for adults and Ksh200 for children. For visitors from outside East Africa, the charges are Ksh500 for adults and Ksh250 for children.

Lord Egerton Castle

The Lord Egerton Castle is a unique architectural marvel in the county. Built by Lord Maurice Egerton in the 1950s as a grand home, the castle is now a museum and a popular destination for tours and picnics

"At 45, Lord Egerton courted an Austrian princess. He even built a four-roomed cottage, hoping that it would impress the woman of his life," Egerton University explains on its website.

"Maurice invited her to see it, but disappointingly, the lady only spent two hours in the compound, prompting Maurice to think of constructing a bigger house befitting her status."

To access the castle you pay Ksh150 if you are a Kenyan adult. Kids pay between Ksh50 and Ksh100 depending on the ir level of schooling.

Menengai Crater

Menengai Crater is one of the world's largest volcanic craters. It is frequented by people keen on the scenic view of  Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria, and the surrounding landscape. 

Those visiting can hike to various viewpoints, with the most popular being the main observation point at the crater's rim.

Charges range from Ksh88 to Ksh282, however, having guides attracts additional fees.

Hell's Gate National Park

It is famous for its scenery, including volcanic columns, hot springs, and spectacular gorges. 

The park activities include biking, bird watching, camping, game viewing, hiking, and rock climbing.

Entry charges for Kenyan adults are Ksh300 and Ksh215 for kids. Foreigners are charged 26USD (Ksh3,362) for adults and 17USD (Ksh2,198) for children.

"The park is characterized by diverse topography and geological rock formations. Christened “A walk on the wild side’’ the park allows walking and cycling activities (guided by KWS security on request or by local community guides at a fee) on the sprawling grasslands with well-maintained dust roads," KWS explained. 

"Teeming with hundreds of wild flora and fauna this fact makes it ideal for game drives. Wild animals to see include: Zebra, eland, giraffe, buffalo, serval cat, hartebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, klipspringer, antelope, leopard, and so much more.

Those who have vehicles are charged based on the number of seats as follows: cars with less than six seats are charged Ksh300, while those with 6 to 12 seats pay Ksh1,030.

Entry fees for vehicles that are 13 to 24 seats are Ksh2,585. For vehicles with 25 to 44 seats, the fee is Ksh4,050, and those with 45 seats and above pay Ksh5,000
