Safaricom has announced that it handled 46.61 billion M-Pesa transactions worth Ksh41.68 trillion in the 2026 financial year.
In its 15th Sustainable Business Report, covering the period between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, and released on Tuesday, October 27, the telco reported that the number of transactions represented a 25.1% increase from 37.10 billion recorded in the previous financial year, while the value grew by 8.9% from Ksh38.27 trillion.
According to the report, M-Pesa processed more than 6,000 transactions per second, with a daily transaction value of Ksh114 billion.
Speaking at the launch, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa noted that the company created Ksh1.25 trillion in value for Kenyan society, as assessed by Alexforbes, representing a 10% increase from the previous year. Social value generated by M-Pesa alone stood at Ksh478.1 billion. Net economic value rose by 3.5% to Ksh654 billion from Ksh632 billion.
"Sustainability cannot sit alongside business. It has to be how we do business," he said, adding, "Our impact is measured not only by what we earn, but by the value we create for society. More than half of M-PESA transaction volumes (57.8%) attracted no customer charge, helping millions of Kenyans transact affordably and participate in an increasingly digital economy."
According to the report, the company serves more than 71.53 million customers, including 57.93 million in Kenya and 13.6 million in Ethiopia.

The report further highlighted that Safaricom's ecosystem sustained more than 1.4 million jobs during the year, including livelihoods supported through its network of M-PESA agents, dealers, suppliers and other partners. A further 70,000 jobs were created.
Overall, Safaricom had 5,648 permanent employees, 4% of whom were people living with disabilities.
The company also reported connecting 739,000 homes to fixed internet, while 8,200 households subscribed to its Ksh800 monthly internet package.
The company’s social impact also extended into communities, with 4.4 million lives impacted through Safaricom and M-PESA Foundation programmes in areas including health, education, economic empowerment, water and environmental conservation.
In its green energy efforts, the company added 596 new solar sites, bringing the total to 2,028. However, this remains below its target of 5,000 solar sites by 2030.
According to the report, fraud incidents dropped by 82%, while the telco recovered 46% of reported fraud losses and prevented 94% of fraud attempts during the period.

Ndegwa also revealed that the company was working to democratise access to the digital economy, most recently through the introduction of Ziidi Trader on My OneApp, which allows Kenyans to invest in company shares.
"We have started to democratise access towards buying shares and so on through Ziidi Trader. Right now, a large proportion of the volumes that go to the stock exchange actually goes through Ziidi Trader," Ndegwa explained.
He added that the company was working with the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) to expand access to fixed-income investments.
"We are now working with the Central Bank to see how we can also allow people to access the fixed income side of investment."
Unlike previous year’s reporting, Safaricom, for the first time, transitioned its sustainability disclosure framework to a double materiality approach. This assesses how the company’s activities affect people and the environment, and how sustainability issues such as climate change, fraud and cybersecurity could affect the long-term value and resilience of the business.
