My Wallet Hates Me for Buying This Toyota Mark X

Welcome to the Money254 Car Series — where we spotlight car owners across Kenya and their experiences behind the wheel. From first-time buyers to seasoned motorists, we dig into the motivations, costs, lessons, and joys of owning different car models in Kenya today.

This week, we feature Newton, a Nairobi-based professional whose family owns a 2012 Toyota Mark X.

In 2023, I decided it was time to step up. I wanted a vehicle that didn't just get me from point A to point B. I wanted something that commanded respect, looked luxurious, and delivered high-performance thrills

My eyes landed on a 2012 Toyota Mark X, and for Ksh 1.1 million, I thought I had secured the deal of the century.

But three years into ownership, I’ve learned that there is a steep price for driving this car that the showrooms don't tell you about.

The Mark X is, without a doubt, a masterpiece of design. It looks sharp, moves with authority, and offers an interior that feels significantly more premium than your average Japanese commuter.

But the moment you start that 2.5L V6 engine, the reality of your financial commitment hits you. In the stop-and-go chaos of Nairobi traffic, this car is notoriously thirsty, gulping fuel at a rate of 7–9 km/l.

However, on the highway, it averaged 12 km/l.

The Maintenance

I don't take risks. I service the car strictly every 5,000 to 7,000 km with a standard service running between Ksh 12,000 and Ksh 20,000.

The Mark X is heavy, and that weight takes a toll. I’ve found myself frequently replacing suspension bushes, dealing with leaking valve cover gaskets, and fighting the dreaded carbon buildup common in direct-injection engines.

However, I must note that it is arguably the easiest luxury car to maintain in Kenya because parts are available in every major shop.

If there is one thing that keeps me awake at night, other than the fuel gauge, it’s the interior experience.

The 2012 infotainment system is a relic. In an era of seamless smartphone integration, my Mark X feels like it belongs in another decade.

I’ve had to sink extra cash into aftermarket screen upgrades just to feel like I’m driving a car built in this century.
