Why My Ksh600K Nissan Note Wasn't the Bargain I Expected

Welcome to the Money254 Car Series — where we spotlight car owners across Kenya and their experiences behind the wheel. From first-time buyers to seasoned motorists, we dig into the motivations, costs, lessons, and joys of owning different car models in Kenya today.

This week, we feature Jack, who shares what it’s like owning a 2008 Nissan Note.

In 2023, my life changed. I had just become a father, and suddenly, I needed a way to get my newborn to the clinic and my family around safely. My heart was set on a Toyota Premio, but the over Ksh1 million market price was far beyond my reach.

I had Ksh600,000 in savings. With the weight of new fatherhood responsibilities, the last thing I wanted was a bank loan.

So, when a family friend offered me his 2008 Nissan Note for exactly my budget, it felt like the stars had aligned. I could buy the car cash, stay debt-free, and start my journey into fatherhood on a clean slate.

Looking back, that was the moment I walked into the 15-year trap.

The Performance

To be fair to the Nissan Note, it isn't a bad car. The 1500cc petrol engine is a fuel-saver’s dream, giving me a solid 15-17 km/l. For daily commutes to work and weekend shopping runs, it was easy on the pocket at the pump.

But the honeymoon ended when the mechanical reality of a 15-year-old car set in.

The car started showing its age almost immediately. I began dealing with the  some issues. I started experiencing juddering and slipping, a terrifying feeling when you're carrying your family on a busy highway.

On the other hand, the front suspension wear meant every Nairobi pothole felt like a personal attack on the car.

From erratic wipers to sudden failures, I was spending an estimated Ksh 25,000 to Ksh 30,000 annually just to keep it roadworthy.

The Real Regret

While the mechanical issues were annoying, the real regret came when I tried to protect my asset. I assumed that since I had bought the car legally and it was in good condition, getting comprehensive insurance would be a breeze. I was wrong.

Because the car was exactly 15 years old in 2023, I hit a brick wall with almost every renowned underwriter in Kenya:

Most top-tier insurance companies strictly restrict comprehensive cover to vehicles under 15 years from the year of manufacture. Those few companies willing to listen demanded a mandatory mechanical valuation and inspection report.

Even after the inspections, the premiums offered were high.

I found myself stuck with a Third-Party cover, driving a car I had spent my entire savings on, knowing that one major accident could wipe out my entire investment.

If I could go back, I would think twice before making the purchase.
