The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has ordered an audit of all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) following an increase in cases of branding violations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 27, NTSA revealed that many matatus had violated the existing regulations through graffiti, modification of lights and windows.
The authority added that there were some cases where the graffiti on the vehicles was making it difficult for police and other Kenyans to identify the sacco or the company that the vehicles belonged to.
In other scenarios, some vehicles did not have the branding of white and yellow lines that are stipulated in the NTSA regulations.
Therefore, all matatu owners, sacco were directed to take an audit of their fleets and undertake corrective measures.
“All licensed Public Transport Operators are hereby directed to conduct an immediate and comprehensive audit of their fleets to ensure the name of the Sacco or company under which each vehicle is licensed is boldly and clearly displayed on the front, rear, and both sides of the vehicle in accordance with regulations,” NTSA directed.
“Also, ensure that the branding is uniform and consistent across all vehicles operating under a single operator to ensure cohesion and easy identification, and that any franchise or partner branding is presented in a manner that does not overshadow, conflict with, or dilute the branding of the licensed operator.
Additionally, drivers and conductors were instructed to wear the relevant uniforms even as operators ensure that their relevant licences are up-to-date.
NTSA warned that vehicles risked having their licences revoked should they fail to adhere to the set guidelines.
“Through this public notice, the Authority directs all Public Service Vehicle operators, motor vehicle owners and PSV drivers to take immediate corrective action,” read the notice in part.
“Failure to which regulatory measures will be instituted at the individual vehicle owner and operator level, including but not limited to vehicle impoundment, suspension and revocation of the operator’s license, including withdrawal of access to the NTSA service portal.”
