I Invested My Savings in Cows, I Lost Everything in 1 Year

For most of my career, I worked as a high school teacher before eventually rising to become a headteacher.

During my career, I spent years thinking about how I would grow my savings outside my salary. I wanted an investment that could generate wealth over time and give me some financial security.

In  March 2021, when I eventually left teaching at the age of 40 to join the private sector, I had managed to save Ksh400,000 for my investment.

The question was what to do with it.

Given that I had gotten some work for an NGO in Nakuru, one thing I knew for sure was that I did not want to invest in my rural home. I had seen too many people struggle with projects that were hundreds of kilometres away and difficult to supervise.

Yet somehow, I ended up making a very similar mistake.

I had always admired dairy farming. The demand for milk seemed consistent, and many successful farmers had built wealth through livestock.

After exploring different options, I decided to buy eight Friesian calves that were about six months old. Each cost me roughly Ksh50,000, bringing my total investment to Ksh400,000.

The challenge was where to keep them. That is when I remembered a former herder who had worked at the school where I had served as headteacher in Kisumu County.

He struck me as hardworking, disciplined and trustworthy. Over the years, we had remained in touch occasionally. He also kept his own cows, which gave me confidence that he understood livestock management.

After several discussions, we agreed that he would take care of my animals on his farm.

In return, I would send him Ksh3,000 every month for upkeep and labour. At the time, the arrangement felt perfect.

For the first year, everything appeared to be working exactly as planned.

The calves were growing well. I regularly received updates and photos on WhatsApp. Whenever I called, he seemed transparent about the progress.

Every report reassured me that I had made the right decision.

Then one evening in November 2022, I received a phone call that changed everything.

My herder sounded distressed. He told me that thieves had raided the farm during the night and stolen the cows.

I was shocked. The following day, I travelled to see him in person.

When I arrived, he looked devastated. He explained that the thieves had not only stolen my eight cows but had also taken some of his 10 goats.

Listening to him, I felt sympathy more than suspicion. After all, he appeared to be a victim too.

A police report was filed, and investigations supposedly began.

Weeks turned into months. No cows were recovered. No suspects were arrested. The entire matter seemed to have reached a dead end.

Then, three months later, I received another phone call from one of the herder's cousins, a man I had grown familiar with while following up on the alleged theft. 

He told me something difficult to believe. The cows had never been stolen.

According to the information I received, the theft had been staged.

The herder had allegedly worked with some of his relatives to create the appearance of a livestock theft. The cows had reportedly been taken to a friend who lived in another village before being sold off.

At first, I refused to believe it.

But as more details emerged, the story began to make sense.

Suddenly, there were explanations for many of the inconsistencies that had bothered me after the alleged theft.

The more I investigated, the more I discovered that it was common for herders who were taking care of other people's cattle to stage thefts and sell them off.

I reported the matter to the police and attempted to pursue the case. Unfortunately, reality quickly set in.

The herder was based in Kisumu County, far from Nakuru, where I was based. Every police follow-up required travel, time and money. The herder's cousin, who had provided the information, did not want to come forward either, fearing the backlash he would face for going against his relative.

Eventually, I found myself spending more time and money pursuing justice than I was likely to recover.

Reluctantly, I stopped following the case. To this day, the loss remains one of the most painful financial lessons I have ever experienced.

Looking back, my biggest mistake was not buying the cows.

It was investing in something I could not personally supervise and relying entirely on trust to protect my money.

The herder may have looked trustworthy, and for a while everything appeared to be working.

But I learned that when it comes to investments, trust alone is never a substitute for proper oversight.
