Turaco Microinsurance and VisionFund International on Thursday announced a global Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at boosting access to simple, affordable, and claims-friendly insurance for low-income families across Africa.
Turaco CEO and Co-founder Ted Pantone noted that the MOU will enable the partnership to expand access to affordable insurance to more markets across the continent, with the next phase earmarked for Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia, and Rwanda.
“This partnership lets us take that proven model and turn it into a deliberate, shared roadmap across many more markets. We are especially excited about what we can build together on prevention and outpatient care, meeting families before a crisis rather than only after one,” he said.
For years, the two companies have collaborated to distribute insurance products in Kenya and Uganda, where they have insured a quarter of a million people.

The new agreement is designed to deepen the impact of the partnership across new markets.
According to VisionFund International CEO Edgar S. Martinez, the partnership will help the organisation extend protection to more families it already serves while also learning how to reach them before a crisis hits.
“Families in the communities we serve face real shocks—illness, death, disability, and climate-related events—that can undo years of hard-won progress in an instant. Our work with Turaco in Kenya and Uganda has shown how effective simple, well-designed insurance can be at protecting that progress,” Martinez said.
VisionFund International, the microfinance arm of World Vision, seeks to alleviate poverty through financial services and programmes such as Finance Accelerating Savings Group Transformation (FAST), targeting vulnerable women living in rural communities.
Turaco, an embedded microinsurance and technology company operating across Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, and Pakistan, supports VisionFund in developing solutions focused on preventative and outpatient care.
