Why ‘Just One Drink’ Is Never Just One and What It’s Doing to Your Budget

It usually starts the same way: “Let’s just have one.”

One drink after work. One quick stop before heading home. One casual plan with friends that wasn’t even in your budget.

But if you’ve ever checked your spending at the end of the week, you already know the truth. It’s almost never just one drink.

For many Kenyans, especially those living in urban areas, this habit has quietly become one of the biggest leaks in their monthly budget. Not because one drink is expensive, but because of what it turns into.

The first drink rarely exists in isolation. Once you sit down, conversations stretch, and the environment shifts your mindset from restraint to relaxation. That initial plan of spending a few hundred shillings quickly changes as you order another round, someone suggests food, or the group decides to extend the night.

In that moment, spending feels social rather than financial, and decisions are made impulsively rather than intentionally. What started as a small, controlled expense often grows into something significantly larger without you noticing.

The Weekly Habit That Adds Up

The real impact of this habit becomes clear when you look at frequency rather than a single outing. One night out may not feel expensive, but repeating it multiple times a week changes the picture entirely.

A few thousand shillings spent casually across several days can quietly accumulate into a substantial monthly expense. Because these outings are spaced out and tied to social moments, they rarely feel like a deliberate financial choice. Yet over time, they can consume a significant portion of income that could have gone toward savings, investments, or essential expenses.

Why It’s Hard to Control

Controlling this habit is difficult because it is not just about money; it is about behaviour and environment.

Social pressure plays a major role, as declining an invitation can feel like missing out or distancing yourself from friends.

There is also a strong element of self-justification, where people feel they deserve a reward after a long day or week.

At the same time, many individuals do not have a clearly defined budget for social spending, which means these expenses occur outside any structured plan. Without limits, it becomes easy for spending to drift beyond what is affordable.

How to Take Back Control

Taking control of this spending does not require eliminating your social life, but it does require intentional decisions.

Setting a clear limit for social spending, whether weekly or monthly, creates boundaries that help prevent excess. Deciding in advance how often you will go out and how much you are willing to spend can make a significant difference.

Some people also find it helpful to separate this money from their main budget so that once it is used up, there is no temptation to overspend.

Choosing more affordable alternatives, such as meeting during the day or limiting the number of outings, can also help maintain balance without sacrificing enjoyment.
