The Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) has published a list of 52 banks and microfinance institutions that have insured the deposits of their customers.
KDIC stated that the financial institutions had insured their deposits till June 2026.
The insurance coverage ensures that depositors are guaranteed protection of their deposits up to a maximum of Ksh500,000, which is reimbursed from the scheme fund immediately a bank fails and is placed under liquidation.
"KDIC embraces alternative resolution tools to resolve troubled banks, including the realization of assets on a timely basis. This layer of protection enables depositors to maximize recovery of their deposits from failed banks above the guaranteed deposits of Ksh500,000. The amounts above the guaranteed are paid to depositors upon recovery of debts and realization of assets of the failed bank.
"To benefit from this KDIC protection, a bank must be a member of the Deposit Insurance Scheme. Currently, the scheme comprises 52 member institutions, including 37 commercial banks, 1 mortgage finance institution, and 14 microfinance banks," read the statement in part.
The categories of deposits covered under this scheme include current accounts, savings accounts, fixed deposit accounts, foreign currency deposits, and all trust accounts
