How to Withdraw Savings From Boma Yangu

Kenyans who have been saving towards purchasing a home through the government's Affordable Housing Programme can request a refund of their contributions if they are not allocated a house or opt out of the programme.

Boma Yangu is the government's online platform that allows Kenyans to register for affordable housing and save towards purchasing a unit.

How to Withdraw Your Boma Yangu Savings

Applications for refunds are made through the Boma Yangu portal. The process involves the following steps:

  1. Log in to Boma Yangu: Visit the platform and sign in using your registered ID number and password.
  2. Open your account dashboard: Navigate to the savings or account section.
  3. Select the refund option: Look for the withdrawal or refund option available on the platform.
  4. Submit your request: Follow the instructions provided and confirm your account details.
  5. Wait for processing: Your request will undergo verification before the approved refund is disbursed to your registered bank or mobile money account.

Keep in mind that submitting a withdrawal request does not mean the money will be refunded immediately. The government must verify your account and requires a 90-day notice.

According to the State Department for Housing, the government had refunded Ksh2.56 billion to Boma Yangu savers by June 2026.

Meanwhile, net savings on the platform increased from Ksh926.4 million in May 2025 to Ksh3 billion in 2026.

The department said the refunds include both members who withdrew their savings and those whose deposits were applied towards the purchase of affordable housing units. It did not, however, provide a breakdown of the two categories.

The figures come as the government continues implementing its Affordable Housing Programme, which allows eligible Kenyans to work towards homeownership through savings and housing allocations.

Meanwhile, the Affordable Housing Board recently increased the prices of affordable housing units, which took effect on October 1.

The government increased prices by as much as Ksh600,000, depending on the type of unit.

Studio apartments rose from Ksh1.5 million to Ksh1.8 million, while the price of a one-bedroom unit increased from Ksh2 million to Ksh2.4 million.

Two-bedroom units also became more expensive, with prices rising from Ksh3 million to Ksh3.6 million.
