Picking a Side Hustle: How Much Time Should You Spend?

Side hustles are no longer just a trend but a necessity for many who need extra income to sustain themselves.

From operations shop to Uber to freelancing online or selling products on social media, Kenyans are increasingly exploring ways to grow their income beyond a monthly paycheck.

But if you already have a full-time job, the big question is: how much time should you realistically spend on a side hustle without burning out?

The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all, but there are practical principles you can follow to strike the right balance between your main job, your personal life, and your side hustle.

1. Using goals to determine time

The first step before committing hours to a side hustle is knowing why you’re doing it. Are you looking for extra cash to cover school fees, save up for a house, or just explore a passion? Or is your side hustle intended to eventually replace your main job?

Your goal will influence how much time you need to spend on it. For example:

  • Extra income: A few hours a week might be enough.
  • Skill-building: You may need longer, focused sessions to learn a new craft.
  • Scaling to full-time: Be prepared to dedicate over 15 hours weekly to grow the business steadily.

Defining your purpose helps you avoid wasting time on activities that don’t align with your goal.

2. Start small and scale

A common mistake for first-time side hustlers is trying to do too much too soon. Many try to treat a side hustle like a second full-time job, only to end up frustrated, exhausted, or falling short in both their main job and side venture.

You can start with manageable hours; even 2–5 hours a week can be enough to test ideas, build consistency, and see real results. Over time, as you gain experience and confidence, you can gradually scale your weekly commitment. The key is sustainable growth, not a quick burnout.

3. Use of time principles

Several productivity experts have developed guidelines for side hustlers. Here are a few widely adopted approaches:

The 10% rule: Dedicate 10% of your workweek to your side hustle. For a 40-hour workweek, that’s about 4 hours. Small, consistent effort often compounds better than sporadic, intensive sessions. This principle was popularised by Chris Guillebeau, the author of The $100 Startup (2012). Guillebeau suggests that even small, consistent efforts, around 10% of your workweek, can lead to meaningful progress in building a business or side project.

Focused hour blocks: Many successful side hustlers work in 2–3 hour blocks 2–3 times per week. This approach avoids fatigue and ensures you make real progress in a concentrated, uninterrupted session.

The 80/20 principle: Identify the 20% of tasks that produce 80% of your results. Whether it’s client outreach, product creation, or marketing, focusing on high-impact activities maximises your time.

Applying these principles prevents wasted effort and keeps your side hustle productive even with limited hours.

4. Spending time based on your wellbeing

A side hustle is meant to support your life, not drain it. If you find yourself working late into the night, skipping meals, or neglecting family and rest, it’s time to rethink your schedule.

Maintain work-life balance: Prioritise rest, exercise, and personal time. Avoid main-job burnout: Your primary income still matters. Never let side hustle commitments affect your performance at work.

5. Tracking and adjusting time on side hustles

A side hustle is a living project. The number of hours you spend should evolve with your experience and results.

  • Track your weekly hours and tasks.
  • Reflect on results: Are you generating income, gaining skills, or testing an idea effectively?
  • Adjust as needed: If progress is slow, consider adding focused hours. If you feel burnt out, scale back.

The truth is, there’s no strict formula for how many hours a side hustle should take. It depends on your goals, your energy levels, and your main job commitments. But by starting small, applying time principles, focusing on high-impact activities, and protecting your well-being, you can build a successful side hustle without compromising your life or primary income.
