Why Chia Seeds Are Becoming a Health Trend in Kenya

One of the products that is dominating health and fitness debate in Kenya currently is chia seeds. From people looking to lose weight to those seeking to control their eating habits, chia seeds are gaining popularity because of their accessibility and ease in using them.

Unlike other products that Kenyans believe can help with their weight loss journey, chia seeds are relatively affordable and available in supermarkets and wholesale shops.

During a spotcheck across supermarkets, Money254.co.ke, established that a 100-gram pack typically retails for about Ksh199, while a 500-gram container costs around Ksh839, depending on the brand.

But beyond the hype, why are more Kenyans turning to chia seeds? Interviews with users reveal that curiosity, weight management goals, and convenience are among the biggest drivers.

For many people, the journey begins with hearing about the potential health benefits.

Ruth Jepkorir, who is based in Nairobi, says she started using chia seeds after learning they could help with appetite control.

She adds that its versatility was one of the biggest reasons she started using the seeds. Because they have little flavour, they can be mixed into drinks, baked goods, oatmeal, or even yoghurt without drastically changing the taste of a meal.

“I heard that they can help with your stomach, and I thought they would help control my eating habits. I like that I can add them to almost anything, like pancakes, oatmeal, smoothies, because they are tasteless,” she revealed.

Another user, Daniela, a recent graduate in Nairobi, says she was mainly drawn to chia seeds because of the weight-loss conversations around them.

“I was told that chia seeds help with weight loss, and I knew that was it for me. I went to the place I had been directed to with my friend and bought mine,” she says.

Unlike a notable number of people who hate slimy food or drinks, Daniela enjoys the texture of chia seeds. “For me, I actually enjoy the slimy feeling in my mouth,” she adds.

When soaked in water, chia seeds absorb liquid and form a gel-like texture, which is why they are commonly used in puddings, oats and smoothies.

The origin of chia seeds: The seeds originated from Mexico and Guatemala and belong to the mint family. The seeds are rich in fibre, plant-based protein, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. It has nutrients that support digestion, heart health and energy levels.

Downside of the use of chia seeds

While many people enjoy the benefits, users also say that chia seeds require some care in how they are prepared. Ruth recalls one unpleasant experience when she consumed them dry.

“There’s a time I took them dry, and I was bloated because I didn’t take enough water,” she says.

She also notes that cleaning containers after using chia seeds can be tricky.

“There is also a time I forgot to soak the water bottle immediately, and the leftover chia gel dried up, and it was difficult to deal with the stick,” she explains.

For this reason, she advises anyone using them to soak the seeds first before consuming them.

Some users also noted that managing the seeds if you buy them in large quantities can be a challenge.

“I have stopped taking it regularly because I sometimes forget to use it. I also bought a lot, and I am still left with a large quantity. I even fear that it may expire,” Daniela added.

2. Supports heart health: Chia seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are associated with improved heart health and may help reduce cholesterol levels.

3. Improves digestion: The combination of soluble and insoluble fibre in chia seeds can support gut health and help relieve constipation.

4. Helps stabilise blood sugar levels: The fibre, protein and healthy fats in chia seeds slow down digestion, which may help prevent spikes in blood sugar levels.

5. Supports bone health: Chia seeds contain minerals such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, which are important for bone strength.

Potential Risks

1. Eating them dry can cause discomfort: Because they absorb liquid quickly, consuming dry chia seeds without enough water can cause bloating or digestive discomfort.

2. Overconsumption may lead to digestive issues: The high fibre content can cause stomach upset if consumed in very large quantities.

3. Improper storage may reduce freshness: Like many seeds, chia seeds can go bad over time if stored poorly or kept for too long.
