Money Market Funds remain the dominant Collective Investment Scheme (CIS) in Kenya, but Special Funds are rapidly gaining ground as investors seek higher returns.
According to the latest data from the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) covering Q2 of 2026, MMFs accounted for Ksh460 billion, or 49% of total Assets Under Management (AUM) in CISs.
Notably, special funds recorded the highest quarterly growth rate at 24%, outpacing equity funds (23%) and fixed income funds (15%). The strong growth signals a shift in investor appetite beyond traditional money market products, even as MMFs continue to dominate the market due to their low-risk profile.
According to the CMA report, Assets Under Management (AUM) in Special Funds grew by nearly Ksh49.2 billion in the three months to June 2026. The growth translates to an average of approximately Ksh547 million invested every day during the period.
Data shows that AUM in Special Funds increased from Ksh203.5 billion at the end of March 2026 to Ksh252.8 billion by the end of June 2026.
The largest special funds by AUM were Mansa-X Special Fund, which managed Ksh163.8 billion, Mansa-X Special Fund USD with Ksh20.5 billion, and Oak Multi Asset Special KES Fund with Ksh19.0 billion.
