For three years, the little blue hatchback known affectionately as "Blue Ivy" has been the reliable workhorse of my life. This 2012 Volkswagen Golf, purchased for Ksh1.3 million, is the perfect example of how a sensible choice can be the rewarding one.
The decision to choose the Golf was driven by a clear set of practical needs. Above all, I needed a car that was economical and reliable, a machine that would seamlessly handle my "day-to-day errands" without straining the fuel budget.
While I might have aimed for something different with a larger budget, there are "no regrets" about this choice. The Golf offered the ideal blend of low running costs, ease of maintenance, and comfort for both short city runs and extended drives.

The Golf's use is exceptionally varied. It’s the primary vehicle for daily logistics like shopping and running errands across the city.
Critically, it also supports a creative career: as a rapper, I frequently use it for moving equipment to gigs, demonstrating its versatility. Beyond work, it’s a dependable vehicle for family visits to the countryside and casual weekend outings, traversing primarily city roads and highways.
The car's fuel consumption is a key factor in its overall success, especially given the current economic climate. Its 1.2-litre engine delivers admirable efficiency, averaging about 12 km per liter in the city and stretching up to an impressive 20 km per liter on the highway. This makes it an economical and convenient solution for all my needs.

Maintaining the Golf is refreshingly simple and budget-friendly. The regular service interval is set at every 10,000 km, focusing on oil and filter changes and routine checks. A typical service costs between Ksh 8,000 and Ksh12,000, which makes it a predictable expense in monthly planning. Common replacements, such as brake pads, tires, and the occasional battery, are easily managed.
Sourcing spare parts is straightforward. As the Golf is a common model in Kenya, parts are readily available at local garages and auto shops, eliminating the hassle of long waiting times or complex importation processes.

Despite its many virtues, there are two small areas where the owner wishes for improvement.
Being used heavily for both family and professional equipment transport, a bit more boot space would be beneficial. Additionally, slightly better acceleration would make those longer trips and highway merges a bit smoother.
Ultimately, the 2012 VW Golf is highly recommended. It is an affordable, dependable, and highly effective vehicle that perfectly balances performance with cost, proving its worth as a versatile, everyday companion.
