
The number of women earning a monthly salary of Ksh100,000 per month has reduced by 4,861 within a year.
In a statistical report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) released on Monday, December 1, women earning Ksh100,000 and above in 2023 were 139,847, and later dropped to 134,986 in 2024.
While the report did not highlight the specific reasons behind the sharp decline, statistics show that between 2022 and 2023, the number of women witnessed an increase from 125,579 to 139,847.
Conversely, the number of men who joined the Ksh100k band between 2023 and 2024 increased by 14,984. In 2023, 247,571 men were earning Ksh100,000 and above, and that figure increased to 262,555 by the end of 2024.
Overall, 397,541 Kenyans earned Ksh100,000 and above, an increase from 387,418 reported in 2023.
In terms of sectors majority of Kenyans earning Ksh100,000 were employed in the education sector (92,362), followed by wholesale, retail, and repair of vehicles (47,838), and health and social work (41,046).

Other notable sectors were agriculture (35,849), finance and insurance (34,044), manufacturing (31,071), construction (28,384), public administration (25,275), and ICT (20,108).
The least producing sectors in this salary band were mining (507), extraterritorial organizations (399), and real estate (358).
"Earnings or wages cover all cash payments, including: basic salary, cost of living allowances, profit bonus, together with the value of rations and free board, and an estimate of the employer’s contribution towards housing.
"Earnings as shown in this section are lower than the estimate of factor income going to employees because they exclude: pensions, employers’ contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) or private provident funds, and personal emoluments for the armed forces," read the report in part.

According to the KNBS report, the majority of employed Kenyans earn between Ksh50,000 to Ksh99,999. Out of the 3,213,820 Kenyans, 1,460,974 belong to this band.
The majority of individuals in the band are employed in education (332,218), public administration (211,904), and manufacturing (191,755).
Meanwhile, employed Kenyans in the Ksh30,000 to Ksh49,999 range were 1,036,030, with a majority employed in the education sector (210,529), followed by agriculture (121,243).
The statistics for the other salary bands were Ksh25,000 to Ksh29,999 ( 93,391), Ksh20,000 to Ksh24,999 (115,020), Ksh15,000 to Ksh19,999 (57,580), and Ksh10,000 to Ksh14,999 (40,953).
Kenyans who earned below Ksh10,000 per month in 2024 were 12,331, a slight increase from 12,062 reported in 2023.
In the band below Ksh10,000, men also dominate at 6,861, as compared to 5,470 females.
The only band where women outnumber men was the Ksh14,000 to Ksh19,999 at 35,529 and compared to 22,051 for men.
