How I Lost Ksh400K After a Free Lunch

I had been teaching for six years when I finally hit what felt like a major milestone, saving Ksh400,000.

It wasn’t easy. Teaching doesn’t come with a lot of financial breathing room, so this money came from discipline. Saying no to trips, cutting down on shopping, and finding small ways to save every month.

By 2024, I felt ready. I didn’t want the money to just sit in my account anymore. I wanted it to grow.

For the longest time, I had one plan in mind. Buy land, then later take a loan and build rental units. It felt like the safest, most “Kenyan” investment.

Then Sam happened.

Sam was my neighbour. We weren’t close, but we talked occasionally.

From the outside, he looked like he had figured life out. He worked at an NGO, drove two cars, and casually mentioned his investments in land and farming every now and then.

So one day, I decided to ask him for advice.  I remember thinking, “Why struggle to figure this out alone when someone right next to you has already done it?”

He seemed open to it but said he was busy and suggested we meet later in the week. That weekend, he invited me out.

We went to a restaurant I had only seen on Instagram. The kind of place where you hesitate before opening the menu.

Sam insisted I order whatever I wanted.

We talked for hours about land, investments, and opportunities. He sounded knowledgeable, confident, and experienced. At some point, the conversation shifted.

He mentioned that he was also planning to buy a 50 by 100 land in Kikuyu for Ksh1.2 million to put up rentals. Then he said something that stuck:

“Instead of you struggling alone, why don’t we combine our money and invest together? We can even register a company — it will be easier to grow.”

It sounded… smart. I didn’t give him an answer immediately. I told him I needed time to think.

But as I went home, I kept replaying the evening in my head. The advice. The confidence. The fact that he had just spent over Ksh5,000 on lunch without blinking.

To me, that signalled success. And without realising it, I started trusting him.

A few days later, I agreed. Sam said he would handle everything, like registering the company, identifying the land, and processing the paperwork.

All I needed to do was send my contribution. I sent the Ksh400,000. That’s when things slowly started changing.

At first, everything seemed normal.

Whenever I followed up, Sam would say the company registration was ongoing. Or that he was out of town handling something related to the land.

But as weeks turned into months, the updates became less clear.

I started noticing things. He would come home late. He was rarely around on weekends. When I called, he would say he was busy or promise to call back, and sometimes he wouldn’t.

Something didn’t feel right. One day, I pushed harder. That’s when he handed me a title deed.

For a moment, I felt relieved. It looked legitimate. It was proof that something had actually been done.

But there was one problem. The title wasn’t in the company name. It was in Sam’s name. When I questioned him, he brushed it off.

“It’s just an error. I’ll have it corrected,” he said.

I wanted to believe him. But this time, I didn’t relax. I decided to do my own follow-up. That’s when everything fell apart.

There was no registered company. The documents I had been shown were fake.

And the title deed? It was real — but it wasn’t part of any joint investment. Sam had bought that land long ago. In simple terms, I had been conned.

Around that time, Sam relocated. He moved out quietly. My calls went unanswered. Messages ignored.

I tried everything, reaching out, police, asking around, but I couldn’t trace him. That’s when it finally sank in. My Ksh400,000 was gone.

Looking back, I keep asking myself one question:

At what point did I lose control of my decision?

And the answer always goes back to that lunch. It wasn’t just about the food. It was the feeling of being hosted, guided, and “helped” by someone who seemed more experienced.

I felt indebted. I felt like I owed him trust. That’s how I ended up agreeing to something I hadn’t fully thought through.

Today, I am rebuilding. More cautious. More informed. A bit more sceptical. I still believe in investing. I still believe in land.

But I’ve learned one hard lesson: Not every opportunity that feels comfortable is safe. And sometimes, the most expensive decisions don’t feel like mistakes when you’re making them.
