Turaco Named to 2026 Norrsken Impact 100 Celebrated in Times Square

Turaco, the Kenyan microinsurance company providing affordable embedded insurance, was on Tuesday named among the world's 100 most promising startups and featured on the Nasdaq Tower in Times Square, New York.

Headquartered in Nairobi, the company was recognised alongside businesses solving hard problems at scale by outperforming the legacy models that created them.

Turaco, which currently operates in six markets, designs affordable insurance covers embedded into products and services that people who earn a living day by day already use. These include loans, solar subscriptions, savings accounts, and mobile phones.

"If this kind of cover reaches the millions of people already paying for loans and solar kits, insurance stops being a product for the few, and no longer needs an agent to travel out and collect it. A spell in hospital, or a death in the family, wouldn't have to push a household back into poverty. A shopkeeper could meet the bill, bury a parent properly, and still open again the next morning," Norrsken explained during the announcement.

Turaco appeared on the list alongside three other Kenyan companies: Arc Ride, which specialises in battery swapping; Honeycoin, which operates in the payments sector; and Biosorra, a start-up that converts nutshell waste into carbon-rich soil.

Norrsken is a non-profit, non-partisan, and non-religious foundation that connects founders solving important problems with capital, knowledge, and networks.

The list of 100 companies was narrowed down from 1,400 nominations. The selection criteria included positive global impact and the use of scalable technology to solve global problems.

Since its launch in 2019, Turaco has grown to cover more than 8 million people across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, and Pakistan.

This comes months after, in May 2026, the insurance company was named among the fastest-growing companies in Africa by the Financial Times.

Kenya had 17 firms represented while General Printers and Turaco Insurance were the top performers, ranking at positions 13 and 29, respectively. Overall, 130 companies featured on the list.

According to the Financial Times, Turaco recorded revenue of Ksh963 million (USD 7.46 million), up from Ksh189 million (USD 1.47 million) in 2021.
